Top Ten Tuesday: Books on my Autumn To-Read List

The shift from summer to fall always makes me feel like re-reading my favorite books. The mood of the season also draws me more strongly than ever toward the tales of yesteryear.

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish! Do come join the fun...

This list is a mix of re-reads and first reads:

1. The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. Re-read. I've been aching to go through this book again for months, but the Wheel of Time has taken up most of my reading time.

2. Towers of Midnight by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. First read--the only WoT book currently available that I haven't read, other than the prequel.

3. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Re-read. I like to go through this one every year.

4. The Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling. Re-read. It's actually been a couple of years since I read the middle of the series. Time goes fast....

5. Something by P.G. Wodehouse. First read; I read Psmith in the City and it made me want to read more by the author. His work seems like good autumnal comfort reading.

6. The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald. First read. As I packed up my workspace, I discovered my copy of this book with a bookmark in about Chapter 2. Whoops.

7. Lilith by George MacDonald. First read. This one was on my shelf, waiting for me to finish The Princess and the Goblin.

8. Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. First read, and actually I'm about 2/3 of the way through it. It was my pick for book club this fall.

9. World's First Love by Fulton Sheen. First read. October's book club choice.

10. Fatherless by Brian Gail. First read. November's book club choice.

As for what I'll read to review on my blog, well—we'll see. From the above, I'm only likely to review Towers of Midnight, the MacDonald books, and possibly anything I read by Wodehouse. My picks for blog read-and-reviews tend to be more spontaneous, involving whatever catches my eye at the library. :)

What do you plan to read this fall?

  1. After reading Mockingjay and Albert Speer's Inside the Third Reich I picked up some Wodehouse. I'm currently reading Bertie Wooster Sees It Through. Very, very funny. A Mockingjay email is on its way, sometime! Probably a few months. Until then, though, here's a beautiful rendition of "The Hanging Tree." Don't watch the video; it just distracts from the music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54_LE1YuMRc

  2. Uh, what do I plan to read this fall? Lots. That's really the most precise answer I can give. :)

  3. I would have to say the same thing, George. To riff on Forrest Gump, reading is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you'll get. So I enjoy the mystery (what will these books be?), the anxiety (will there actually be new books worth reading?), and the joy (yes! this is a great book; all is not lost).

That said, in the YA dept., I anticipate sequels to Ally Condie's Matched and Beth Revis' Across the Universe. I also want to finish reading Shannon Hale's books.

I also plan to reread Harry Potter and some other favorites.

You've persuaded me, Jenna to give another try. As a kid, I didn't like it as much as I wanted to, and our edition's illustrations were offputting. It's funny how artwork can influence one's enjoyment of a book.

  5. Rereading is always a temptation to me. I'm rereading Holy Feast, Holy Fast: the religious significance of food for medieval women; Kierkegaard's Sickness Unto Death; maybe Dorian Gray; and hopefully Notes from the Underground.
I'm hoping to read for the first time: at least three or four books, fiction and non-, but I'm not sure what yet..it's harder to plan first reads than it is to plan what to reread, isn't it?

  6. I had a friend say to me recently that I wouldn't have any time to read once I started homeschooling. I know this to be untrue. Maybe I won't have time to shower anymore, or eat breakfast anymore, but I will never NOT have time to read, how silly. So I don't have a list, but I know I will be reading something on any given day.

  7. Merciful goodness... David, I LOVE that arrangement of The Hanging Tree. Can't believe I missed that one! Thanks for the link. Oh, and maybe I'll have to try out some Jeeves and Wooster.

Lots is a perfectly good answer, George. :)

Arabella, I hope you like Heidi this time around! Artwork really does make a difference. And I just put in a request for Across the Universe at the library.

Masha, I ought to read Dorian Gray for the first time. :D

Sarah, LOL! Totally silly. There will always be time to read.
