The Pursuit of Sanity and other stories

PSA: I've got a Tuesday and Wednesday blog scheduled for next week, during our big move. I'm planning to write up a Monday post if at all possible. For Friday and the following week, however, the blog depends entirely upon circumstance—which isn't known for guaranteeing internet access or free time.

Luckily for my sanity, we're about to camp out at my in-laws' for a few days, till we get possession of the new house. I am grateful. It's more than a little difficult to cook with all the cabinets emptied. I can't even find the peanut butter, and besides, I've scrubbed the oven.

Also, I've discovered that Maia doesn't mind chaos in the form of boxes, but she minds very much if we start packing all the normal house stuff into the boxes. She's alternating between hiding out and running madly about the place bouncing off of things. A restoration of sanity will be good for her, too.

Writers' link of the week: Gregory Wolfe on Divine Art, through the new online magazine Rayzd. Intriguing thoughts.

Music of the week: Since Wolfe mentioned several composers I'd never heard of, all of whom developed music from Gregorian chant, here's one of them. Arvo Pärt. Beautiful stuff.

Funny of the week: An Open Letter to the Cats of This Household. Thanks to Mr. Pond for the link.

And now I've got a shower to scrub, a Monday blog-post to write, a bit of packing to do, and so on and so forth. Happy weekend, everybody!

  1. Yes, cats are creatures of order & routine. Never change anything & you'll be all right. :)

As for the open letter to the cats of the household, well, I'll ask when I get home, but I think I'll get 16 unanimous answers debunking that article.

  3. Thanks, George!

Yeah, it's hard to convince the cats to agree. Another thing that--in my opinion--does not constitute torture of a cat is allowing other people into the house. Maia disagrees. She hid under the stove for six hours after the last set of company departed. And they never even saw her.

  4. Our cat has rules for us regarding cat torture: no coughing, no sneezing, no laughing, no crying, no shrieking, no odd vocal sounds. Any disregard of these "catutes" will result in biting.

We know who runs the place.

  5. No hiccuping, either. Bad humans!

Blessings on your move. It will be over before you know it!

  6. No emptying the dishwasher or clanking silverware, either. Cat torture!

  7. Arabella, LOL.

Turns out Maia doesn't like cat carriers. When she went into full-blown panic mode after being zipped into hers, I felt like a cat torturer. Fortunately for all of us, she only had to spend ten minutes in it.

She's settling into the temporary room at the in-laws' well, but now I think she considers it torture that we won't open the closet door for her at 2 AM. I have no idea what she wants in there for. :P

  8. I suspect she wants it, in a strange environment, as a secure place for the typical back to the wall defense. Also as a base for her covert operations. And of course to get your attention, which is working, right?

We have yet to have a cat that doesn't fight like mad against insertion into a carrier, and who doesn't cry the whole time she's in it. Which is understandable, as it means the vet (more cat torture). You might set in in the closet with the door open and a human-smelly t-shirt in it. She might possibly consider it a refuge at your folks.
