I am my usual late bad self. This news has been out a week. But as a singer myself, I would be thoroughly remiss if I didn't give at least the usual blogger's hat-tip to Susan Boyle, whom I am unashamed to say is far better than I am.

I'm not a big fan of fame, which appears to have a sadistic propensity for encouraging people into misery. Susan Boyle is a volunteer at her parish church in Scotland and has spent much of her adult life caring for her parents; there's a lot to be said for that simple, quiet, working life. But she deserves all the recognition she gets, and I hope that for her, fame proves a blessing.
