If you are not going for the easy hits like a typical snarky review, trying to explain why something didn't work for you is difficult. As a result, I think many reviewers either don't write the less-than-glowing review, or they avoid books they don't think they will like altogether.

A review has to tell how you, the reviewer, feels or else it's not worth anything. Doing this without being cruel is the trick!

Great review & Happy Thanksgiving!Audrey @ Ink and Pagehttp://inkandpage.menoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22927650.post-54388425492831351402012-11-21T14:04:37.693-08:002012-11-21T14:04:37.693-08:00Of course, now I'm not sure I speak flawless E...Of course, now I'm not sure I speak flawless English.

"...and he speaks English as flawlessly as anyone in the story, including the narrator."Jenna St. Hilairehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04474588706124865006noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22927650.post-10337750879996562682012-11-21T14:01:43.656-08:002012-11-21T14:01:43.656-08:00Home of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalpyso! I love it. :P

LOL--you know, not until the cover showed up in my post in thumbnail size did I take particular note of the boy's very buffness. At that point, I had to blush over having claimed to like the cover... which I did, for the facial expressions and the water art. But yes, you're absolutely right. He is way too buff for his habitat, and he speaks as flawless English as can be found in the story.

Now I'm fascinated with your name suggestion. I'm pronouncing it "Dzrebt", but the q lends sophistication. ;)Jenna St. Hilairehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04474588706124865006noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22927650.post-33897084231539904152012-11-21T13:49:21.553-08:002012-11-21T13:49:21.553-08:00Cavalry Chapel, home of the Four Horsemen of the A...Cavalry Chapel, home of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (or, since this is a sea story, of the Calypso).

Love the very buff guy on the cover; as a sea creature he wouldn't have been bulky like that. And why does a sea dweller have an English, above world name? Why not Dzreqbt? Let me guess...he speaks flawless English, too.

Good review, Jenna. You laid out clearly the good and the bad.

--ArabellaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22927650.post-8065294047996823452012-11-21T13:18:11.221-08:002012-11-21T13:18:11.221-08:00HAHA.

I absolutely agree with you on tolerance levels for poorly edited self-published work versus poorly edited corporately published work. Grrrrr is right!Jenna St. Hilairehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04474588706124865006noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22927650.post-44227132049268142102012-11-21T13:10:14.929-08:002012-11-21T13:10:14.929-08:00Maybe it was a chapel for Cavalry soldiers? ;)
I ...Maybe it was a chapel for Cavalry soldiers? ;)

I think I'll stay away from the book for now. I can live with poorly edited, disjointed works by independent, self-published authors but when publishers who are constantly whining about how vital they are to the book industry do that sort of thing....grrrrr!
